About the Author

Christopher James is an internationally known artist and photographer whose photographs, paintings, and alternative process printmaking have been exhibited in galleries and museums in this country and abroad. His work has been published and shown extensively, including exhibitions in The Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The George Eastman House, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The first two editions of his book, The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes have received international critical acclaim and are universally recognized by artists, curators, historians, and educators as the definitive texts in the genre of alternative process photography and photographically integrated media and culture. Christopher, after 13 years at Harvard University, is presently University Professor and Director of the MFA in Photography program at The College of Art and Design - Lesley University. It’s a comrehensive book on all the vintage photography techniques. The author is funny so is a delightful reading.

When much younger, I loved seeing my Cambridge MA surroundings as photographs, but, alas, I was an aspiring scientist and had only limited time for such folly. Now I am older (much) and looking forward to retirement and have rekindled my photographic interests. An old large format camera or two (or so) from [internet store] (and a few ventures back into seeing my surroundings as they will be rendered in B&W) got the blood flowing....but not as much as this book did. It's not a fast track to artistry, but it's a kick in the [rear] along the path. Boy have I enjoyed thinking about the prospects for learning new ways to seeing my lovely new home to be, New Mexico!

Perfect gift for a photographer who wants to expand their skills.

This is a fine publication with loads of information on non-silver processes. The newer version of this book is quite expensive and has one extra chapter on collodion, which I don't plan on doing. Otherwise this is the same as the new version for less money, terrific!

This a great book for anyone curious about the roots of the photographic process. It will take you through the various steps leading up to photography with film. It will teach you how to make non silver prints, which were in vogue before film.

This book is great. It has nearly every process I was interested in, and steps you through each of them with: easy to follow instructions, checklists of chemicals, and useful/helpful pictures.Theres enough here to interest both the amateur photographer as well as the seasoned professional who is interested in these techniques.Check it out, I don't think you'll regret it.

This book is great, has step-by-step recipes and explanations of the chemicals, how to set up your darkroom, digital negatives and paper. Every page has examples of the process it's working on, and gives a lot of ideas of different things to try. Plus, it's funny! Don't think I'll need another book for a long time.
