Halfway through reading this novella, I had to take a break to email one of my closest friends and shout that she HAS to get this novella and read it because SHE WOULD LOVE IT (even though she's not a frequent romance-reader), and basically, that's what I want to tell ALL of my wonderful geek-girl friends about it. This story is for us! Read it! YOU WILL LOVE IT.Reggie is not only a proud geek-girl whose love for various f/sf shows, books and animes has made her life a thousand times better; she's also the founder of a geek-girl website, GirlsWithGlasses.com - and can I just say how desperately I wish her site was real? In this novella, her obsession with a wonderful romance anime (one which, again, I truly wish was real, after all the loving descriptions in this novella!) brings her together with Gus, a puzzle designer who's been commissioned to create an escape room based on that anime for an upcoming con. They're both brilliant and obsessed with their work, and they're just perfect for each other.As side-notes, they're also both neuro-diverse, and Reggie has a disability that means she uses a wheelchair, among other things. As a reader who also has an acquired disability (M.E. in my case, unlike Reggie's, but again, something that developed later in my life rather than something I was born with, making it a slightly different journey towards acceptance, etc), I really loved the matter-of-fact way Alyssa Cole wrote Reggie's life and attitudes towards her disability. I thought the way she wrote it was absolutely spot-on, as was the way that Gus's neurodiversity was written. (He's on the spectrum, knows that he sometimes has trouble recognizing other people's emotions, and has come up with strategies to deal with that.)However, what I really loved about both of those things was that they were just ordinary character notes, NOT what the whole story was about. Emotionally, Reggie is used to being "the strong one" because that's her role in her birth family - according to their parents, her twin is "the hot mess" and Reggie's "the successful one," which means that she's terrified of admitting vulnerability to anyone (an issue in building a romantic relationship), and that's only been exacerbated by previous romantic experiences where boyfriends treated her as weak because of her disability. Gus knows he doesn't always interpret other people's emotions correctly, which means (in combination with Reggie's fear of exposing vulnerability) that he worries about whether Reggie feels as strongly about him as he feels about her. But they're both super-smart people who can work things out when they talk, and they're just so funny and awesome together.I loved every bit of their story and their world, and I only wish I could read more and more stories about them!

Can't Escape Love is a first rate romance in the Reluctant Royals series. Cole continues to deliver with every book in this highly acclaimed series.This novella couldn't drop fast enough and it didn't disappoint. Nerd culture. Anime. Blogs. Escape rooms based on said anime. Cole continues to show love to nerd culture and I'm here for it. SIGN ME UP AND TAKE MY MONEY.Can't Escape Love also touches on an important topic. How does one cope with a disability and/or chronic illness and find love? What does it look like to navigate the complexities of love with a able-bodied or mostly able-bodied person? As a person living with a chronic illness that includes certain difficulties it hit home. A close friend, that lives with illness and disability, and I recently discussed the problems with a potential mate seeking to "fix" , " change" or " save" someone living with a disability or illness. The partner might mean well, but misconceptions about chronic illness can lead to disillusionment and relationship failure. Cole showcases this beautifully with Reggie and Gustave.Reggie and Gustave compliment each other so well. Both live with issues or challenges. However, despite their unique situations both still are capable of giving and receiving love. Their worthiness is never questioned and normalized. I needed this message. Romance has now become a poltical battleground because who gets a happy ending is inherently political.Another aspect I enjoyed was the banter between Reggie and Gustave. Cole's gift for compelling dialogue is unparalleled.My only disappointment was not seeing the escape room.

While I love the series as a whole some of titles didn't move me. This one did. I would venture to say the series gets better with the novellas. I loved Reggie. She's a heroine after my nerd fan-girl heart. The hero was adorable and real. Another thing I appreciated is that it gave some more insight into the heroine and her two sister's relationship. Stilll doesn't explain why their parents are clueless as f. Notice I didn't even mention until now how awesome it was to have such a diverse love story. The reason why is that Alyssa is a genius of making those things matter but not be the master of the story. My only .com was that I wanted an epilogue.

Alyssa Cole has a way with quirky characters. In this case 2 Internet content providers - one (Reggie) with a successful website - GirlsWithGlasses and the other (Gus) with a puzzle streaming site with only 1 follower (Reggie).Two online "misfits" manage to find each other and it's a match made in Google heaven. She needs to hear his voice to help with her imsomnia and he needs her nerdy expertise with an Escape Room he is designing. They are a perfect fit and when they actually meet IRL it is perfect.Their interactions could be boring in the hands of a less skilled author but Alyssa Cole writes with just the perfect amount of nerdiness and despite their miscues they manage to find their Happily Ever After.

Alyssa Cole just knows romance. The realist characters, the realistic emotions, the way she depicts people with emotional hangups and often physical ones as well just gets to me. So far I've loved the last two books in this series and I can't wait to keep reading. Reggie was such a fun character, and I want her to pop up even more in the next books. Never let her go away!

I didn't fully connect with the last Reluctant Royals novella but this one really hit the spot as far as the characters. I really loved Reggie, she has a lot of very familiar quirks and Gus's mind worked so much like mine that it hurt. It was nice to see people I could relate to on various levels here. They were cute together, and I hope we get to see more of them soon.
