This is the fourth book I have read written by former President Jimmy Carter, but it certainly won't be the last, as I have enjoyed all four. Some reviewers have criticized his writing style, but I find it very refreshing, almost as if I were in the same room, eagerly listening to him tell stories about his family and growing up in Georgia. I also like the fact that, unlike some autobiographies, he doesn't hold back in writing about both the good and the bad. This book is definitely not a "puff piece," about his family's history, as someone once said, it contains "warts and all."Unlike Mr. Carter, I grew up in the city, but in my early teenage years, I was lucky to spend most weekends, as well as few summers in the country, on six acres of land that my parents owned. Initially, we had no electricity, no telephone, and no indoor plumbing. Because of this, I was able to relate to much (though certainly not all) of the experiences that Mr. Carter described in the book. Nevertheless, I think this book would serve to be a great primer for anyone who has even a passing interest in "the way things used to be." I hope this review helps.

There are fewer and fewer people who have lived an authentic rural life. President Carter is one of the few modern farmer presidents. His knowledge of farming and agricultural practices is vast. His delivery style is warm and genteel. I enjoyed reading about his boyhood relationships and how they influenced his character and presidency.

A gentle but unvarnished memoir of a boyhood spent in segregated rural Georgia before, during and after the Great Depression. It is a book about roots and a way of life that is gone, never to return. A book about customs and values that shaped the child who became the 39th President of the United States. Much of that segregated life style will not be missed, but knowing about it, how it worked and why it ultimately should not, could not and did not continue is a valuable history lesson.The main thing that will strike the reader who is under retirement age is not only how hard children worked in those days but the type of work they did, routinely. One reviewer complained bitterly about graphic descriptions (they weren't, believe me) of butchering hogs. I hate to break it to her but hogs are born to be butchered and end up on the dinner table in one form or another. Today we are insulated from that. Our foremothers and forefathers needed not only to be able to do the deed but to pass the knowledge of how to butcher and dress on to the next generation. Rural America has always been cash poor but if you grow & process your own food you will eat well.I had always thought President Carter was "just a rich farmer" who decided to go into politics. Now I know better.

I knew Jimmy Carter had a background as a peanut farmer. This book told me what that meant in the years he was growing up. It meant outhouses, no electricity, and most interesting, the relationships he and his family had with the black help and farm workers. His playmates were the black children of the hired hands. There were differences in their status but the children enjoyed life and worked together as well as played together. His closest friend and most influential adults were black people. I also learned what it took to be a successful farmer, which his father was.

Enjoyed this interesting narrative of rural southern life in the early 1900s. If you have an interest in southern history this is an excellent book and personal account of that period of time. President Carter's anecdotes of his neighbors, friends and family made that time come alive. I was sorry to see the book end. I purchased this book used and was pleasantly surprised with the quality and as a bonus it was signed by President Carter.

I immediately found myself connected to the descriptions of the rural south, family, blacks and whites, teen years and hopes for college in this book. President Carter writes in a almost folksy style that flows easily across his many life experiences. I so identified with his recollections I could not put the book down. Especially interesting were his revelations about race. He so accurately described what most of us reared in the South, felt and saw. Also his mention that his mom was house mother to the KA Order Chapter, at Auburn, was a fact not readily known.Read this book if you lived through any part of the 1930s to 1970s in the South. You'll be glad you did.

This is one of my favorite books by President Carter. Although slightly abridged, I was very pleased to listen to the entire audiobook. There are 6 CD in the set listed here, however CD # 6 is only a partial duplicate of CD # 5, so in reality, there are only five Cd's that comprise the entire book. Don't know why the sixth one was even included. There is also an unabridged version of this same audiobook, but it is not read by President Carter. Instead, it is read by Tom Stechschulte. That particular copy is a 7 CD set. Both audiobooks were released in 2001.

This was a great autobio! It helps me understand the foundations of this great man. He has done more for this country in retirement than any other former US president that I know of. And he's not through! Check out the Carter Center online.The story was heartwarming and told how a middle class family got through the depression and went on to become very successful business-wise and politically. There were spots of sorrow and spots of humor throughout.
