About the Author

Verna Aardema published her first set of stories, Tales from the Story Hat, in 1960. They were so successful that  she continued to adapt traditional tales and folklore from distant cultures, (usually from Africa and Mexico) to expose young children to the vast variety of human expression. She's the author of over 30 children's books. Her book, Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears (1975) received the Caldecott Medal in 1976 and the Brooklyn Art Books for Children Award in 1977. Who's in Rabbit's House? 1977 was the 1977 School Library Journal Best Book of the Year and a Lewis Carroll Shelf Award winner in 1978. Aardema received the Children's Reading Round Table Award in 1981, and several of her works have been selected as Notable Books by the American Library Association. Her Oh Kojo! How Could You! won the 1984 Parents' Choice Award for Literature.Leo Dillon and Diane Dillon, a husband-and-wife team, created more than 100 book and magazine covers together as well as interior artwork. The Dillons won the Caldecott Medal in 1976 and 1977 In 1978 they were the runners-up for the biennial, international Hans Christian Andersen Award for children's illustrators, and were the U.S. nominee again in 1996.

Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears a West African TaleThis audio book starts out with an iguana and a mosquito talking about the yams the farmer was digging.Snake then approaches the iguana, then goes into the rabbit hole. Love the animals and their sounds as the parade of animals continues.Lion calls a meeting and he gets down to the problems....I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

My son absolutely loved this book as a child. He just had his first son, so I asked him if we still had a copy. We figured out that we never did; we just constantly checked it out from the library. So my 3 month old son is getting his own copy for Christmas.

This is my favorite children's book of all time. The illustrations are the best I've ever seen, and while dark, they are very creative and fascinating. The story itself is also very good, and I love that it has a point at the end, with a "moral of the story", without being a very long book. I think all children should read it, if parents could get past the dark tone of the illustrations.

This was a gift for my 4 year old nephew who is very into mosquitoes for some reason. He loved this book!

Remembered liking this book as a child so I just bought it for my son for Christmas. It's still a good story, but the images are slightly scarier than I remembered. My son seems fine with it but it's something to note.

I remember hearing this story for the first time as a child on Reading Rainbow sound effects and all, so when i saw it on Amazon I decided to buy it for my sister as a birthday gift. It was a read down memory lane that we can relive over and over again.

I loved this book as a child because its a great story with a universal message. I married a Nigerian and I can say all West-African children's books have a positive themes and its certainly something I would like my son to be familiar with. The book was also in great condition.

I read this book as a child and enjoyed it. The illustrations are so memorable that I recognized the book immediately when I saw it on Amazon. I bought it for my 6-year-old son and he loved it. He was sad about the baby owl dying but found the rest of the book rather amusing. He recognized and loved that the book had a similarity to The House That Jack Built, as it recites the events adding one at a time.
